Fabrication 101

Fabrication refers to the building of metal structures by assembling, cutting, or bending. The cutting part is more commonly via sawing, shearing or chiseling it can also be through torching and via CNC cutters. The bending is via hammering or via press brakes. Assembling is via welding, binding with adhesives, threaded fasteners and riveting. There are many kinds of metal fabrication and one of it is the sheet metal fabrication.

Sheet metal fabrication is the bending and shaping processes of sheet metals. It can be given all sorts of elaborate shapes and sections. The equipment for this process can be the simplest hand tools to sophisticated automatic machines.

One type of sheet metal fabrication is shaping. There are many shaping operations that can be used depending on what you want to see as a result. This process can be done on presses and other similar machines. Operations like grooving, seaming stamping, and crimping and beading can also be utilized. These processes are used in stiffening and shaping the sheet metals as well as the formation of tubular sections for circular shapes and many other purposes.

The formation of angles and sections are formed by bending or folding. Coiling is the process of looping over the edge of a sheet metal component. This is done to increase the strength of the metal and to provide a suitable edge. Cylindrical shapes like tubes are produced in a roll forming machine.

Cupping along with embossing is the process that is included in press forming. Cupping refers to the transformation of a blank into a cup form. Embossing refers to a specific design that is usually applied for strengthening purposes. Basically, cupping is the first stage in the forming operation in which the right tool is used to provide the article its final form and shape.

These are only some of the operations that are done in fabrication. Obviously, metal fabrication industry is something that will never be out of demand. Shapes and forms of metal products are formed through fabrication, and apparently, as stated above, there are varieties of processes that products undergo to achieve their final shapes.
